Digging into the past

Cool, huh?

Cool, huh?

My son loves to hunt for fossils. Turns out Texas is a pretty decent place to do it, as we were submerged under water millions of years ago. After a good rain, we go down to the creek and see what we can find. We walk away with hands full. Okay, we probably just have a bunch of run-of-the-mill rocks with indentations, but we prefer to think of them as prehistoric memories of some wonderful, extinct species.

Needless to say, when I discovered an archeology camp in San Antonio, I was thrilled. My son – not so much. But he went, if only to fill his day with something other than computer and television. It turned out to be one of his best camp experiences. Ever.

Now you need a quick disclaimer – sadly, this post isn’t going to help you for this year. The 2009 camps are already full.  BUT, get it on your calendar for summer 2010. (Tip: I made myself a note in my 2010 calendar to contact the camp in March so I don’t forget.)  Here’s the link: Legacy Camp at the Center for Archeological Research

To compensate for not getting this out earlier, I’ve listed a bevy of nature camps below.  More to come on each, but in the meantime, it’s a starting point if you have a child who loves the outdoors. This list runs the gamut – prehistoric discovery and killer whales to gardening and nature hikes.

Have your kids been to any of these camps? If so, please leave a comment so we all can benefit from your knowledge!

My daughter had a wonderful experience at San Antonio Zoo’s camp. The classroom set-up for indoor activities is built around the sloth cage, so the up-close view of the animals starts right away.
The best part of it for her was making enrichment toys for the animals — and then while the animals were off exhibit, the kids would hide them in the cages, then watch as the cheetahs or monkeys went to find and play with them.
She also got to pet a rhino, and how many times can you say *that*?

Deb — Thanks again for all your work on this site.
Just wanted to let everybody know that my 9 year old daughter is at Zoo Camp this week (6/15) and having a terrific time. They are learning about how animals use their senses. This child wants to be veterinarian (or a baker — after she completed last week’s cookie class at San Antonio Academy!) so Zoo Camp has given her unique opportunities to be up close and personal with the animals.
One of my friends enrolled her son at the UTSA Robot camp and is loving it. She found it through your site.
