Photographer and environmentalist Ansel Adams said, “You don’t take a photograph, you make it.”  I love that quote. Photography is all about perception. Seeing the world around you in new ways, capturing moments of beauty or tragedy, joy or anger. I have a very unusual photo.  It’s a layer of rocks. Growing from the rocks is a bright yellow daisy. It’s a beaut, taken by a nine-year-old who happened to see the world differently, capturing contrast, color and texture with the snap of a camera lens.

Wow!

Wow!

She’s a graduate of photography camp at San Antonio Academy.  The class had about 20 students and the instructor was outstanding. They learned about the technology and how it developed over time.  They studied both the technical and creative sides of taking a picture. They shot funny, disembodied head photos and colorful snapshots of nature.  It would have been perfect if only it hadn’t rained cats and dogs the day they were to go to the zoo and photograph the animals.  Bummer. At the end of the week, the teacher chose one photo from each child, blew it up and matted it. The other photos were collated into an album for each to take home.

The Academy is not the only photography camp in town. So, this morning, when a friend emailed me for suggestions, I sent her this list…

Wow — almost makes me wish we closer to SA so I could send my creative geniuses. Sounds like a fantastic program. We’ll move back once the summers maintain lower 80s and Fiesta Texas adds a ski resort; kids should be old enough to operate a camera by then.

I was excited to read this post since I have signed my budding shutterbug up for this class in a few weeks.

My son has been to many day camps around San Antonio, but hands down San Antonio Academy and Sea World camps are the most engaged, memorable and worth every penny!

This year my four-year old will join the eight-year old at the Academy for manipulative magic, everything Clifford the dog, phonics and more. She can’t WAIT!

Noah will take basketball, soccer, math and Out on the Town where they do a fun field trip each day–everything from laser tag to bowling.

As for Sea World, that week is the last hurrah before going back to school and is talked long, long after the session ends.

As a mom, I want summer to be a memorable experience, a great mixture of fun, education and outdoors with staff who I feel are giving my kids the attention they need. In my mind, the Academy and Sea World do just that and more!
