Camp CAMP has long been the gold standard camp for families with children who have special needs. But I’m delighted to see two new organizations beginning to offer this critical service to both the children and their families.

First off, Eva’s Heroes. Of course, Eva Longoria has long been an advocate for children of special needs given her own family situation. Amongst all the things she is doing through her nonprofit, I saw today where there are still several spots left for camp kids, offering an inclusive environment for older children, ages 14-21.

Kids will have the opportunity to do arts and crafts, sports, cooking, group games, computers and field trips – all in an effort to help them increase their ability to function independently and learn the value of teamwork.

There are two one month sessions from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays with extended hours available. Cost is an affordable $110 weekly. You can download a pdf with more instructions by visiting Eva’s Heroes website.

And the newest kid on the block: Mission Road Ministries. The organization is opening up a pilot program this summer to take it’s wonderful programming to the community. At last check, there were still a couple of spots available for up to 10 children to join in. Aside from the fact that this is the only such camp available on the south side of San Antonio, it offers the option to choose days, instead of weeks, for children to attend.

The cost is $50 per day and the camp runs from June 14 through August 13, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Designed for children 6 to 17 years of age with a developmental disability, it offers the opportunity for swimming, team sports, academics, spiritual development, arts and crafts and independent living skills. The cost includes lunch, a snack and all activities, and there is some scholarship funding available through the Bexar Mental Retardation Authority.
