Lions and Tigers and Butterflies – Oh, My
Posted by MomOnMars on September 07, 2011
After a crazy Labor Day weekend, it’s a busy upcoming week in San Antonio.
Lions
Thursday, September 8, kicks off the Alzafar Shrine Circus at the Freeman Coliseum, 3201 East Houston. I love the circus – always have. And one of my favorite things about the Alzafar Shrine Circus is that it has one of the only female ring masters in the country. My other favorite thing: proceeds benefit the Alzafar Shriners, who in turn support the Shriners Hospital for children. At one point, we were very close at maybe having to use this hospital, and I’m more familiar with their services than I’d ever thought I’d have to be. It’s an amazing hospital. Go. Support. And enjoy an amazing circus in the meantime.
SA Busy Kids tip: Show up an hour before show time to meet the circus up close and in person. Ride an elephant, get your face painted and meet the stars.

Tigers
It’s a leap to go from rock band Queen lyrics to the San Antonio Children’s Museum, but watch me do it. “Like a tiger defying gravity…” the Children’s Museum’s PowerBall Hall is going to keep your kids busy for hours. With an interactive ball wall, blowers, launchers, pulls, gears, tubes, alarms, giant funnels, and hundreds of balls, it’s like an introduction to all the basic principals of engineering.
On September 11, Grandparents and grandkids get in free between noon and 3 p.m., courtesy of WellMed Charitable Foundation.
SA Busy Kids tip: The Museum validates for one free hour of parking at the Houston St Garage located at 240 E. Houston Street if you remember to have them stamp it at the front desk.

Butterflies
On September 17, butterflies invade the Botanical Garden. But not just any butterflies. Giant, neon butterflies. You start in a huge caterpillar tunnel. And work your way through tons of interactive exhibits and mazes and slides and puzzles taking you through the entire life cycle of a butterfly. And check out Austin Bike Zoo’s 17-foot Monarch Butterfly bike. Way cool.
SA Busy Kids tip: Get in the mood with Austin’s singing zoologist, Lucas Miller. In fact, I think I’ll give away a Lucas Miller gift pack in honor of the event.
