San Antonio Founders Day celebrates vast array of cultures
Posted by MomOnMars on October 20, 2011
On October 24, 1731, the first official permanent civilian settlement in Texas was born out of 15 families of Canary Islanders who settled San Fernando de Béxar.
This weekend, we’ll celebrate those founders of our beautiful city, and the more than 20 cultural groups who shaped our heritage, at San Antonio Founders Day.
I’m kind of excited about the trumpeter on rooftop overlooking Alamo Plaza. The rest of the exciting day (until 4:30 p.m.) continues on the grounds and in Alamo Plaza with live music and dance; historical, cultural and educational displays from more than 50 local organizations; and crafts and fun educational activities for children in this free, family-oriented event.
The festival was started in 2004 by Frank W. Jennings, author of “San Antonio: The Story of an Enchanted City.” The first celebrations were held in San Pedro Springs Park, but eventually moved to Alamo Plaza, where it resides today.
Exhibitors this year range from the Highland Games & Celtic Music Festival to the Tlaxcalteca Indians of Texas. You can get a full list of the day’s events at the San Antonio Founders Day website.
