When playing in the street is encouraged

Thanks to Colleen Pence for this guest blog post about the upcoming Chalk It Up!

From the time our kids can walk we teach them not to play in the street. And we’re forever reminding them to “Look BOTH ways!” before crossing one. This Saturday parents can loosen that rule for once when downtown Houston Street closes for six inspiration-filled hours of creative community and kid fun.

Each October artpace San Antonio hosts Chalk It Up, a free, family-friendly event. Several blocks of Houston Street shut down to traffic and the road and surrounding sidewalks become the canvas for our city’s premier artists as well as artistic amateurs and kids of all ages.

Chalk It Up 2011 takes place this Saturday, October 8, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Our family attended Chalk it Up last year and we marveled at the masterpieces created with colorful chalk, sometimes a little water, and a whole lot of creativity. Inspired by the murals they watched the artists create, our kids (two and five at the time) grabbed chalk out of boxes (provided in Kidzones located throughout the event) and began creating their own whimsical pictures right in the middle of the road. What’s cooler to a kid than playing in the street WITH parental permission? Pretty much nothing.

And, in a strange reversal of roles, my daughter and son delighted in being the ones to tell their parents to, “Look BOTH ways!” when we crossed the street. They didn’t want us to miss any of the amazing artwork spread out before us.
