Free, fun times at San Antonio museums
Posted by MomOnMars on January 09, 2012A few days ago, a friend of mine posted that he was looking to buy an annual membership to a local museum for the year for his kids. Dawned on me that if you are thinking about doing the same, but aren’t sure which museum is your favorite, you might want to try out each one before making a final decision. And there’s no better way to try something out than trying it out when it’s free! Here’s our guide to free museum times with the scoop on which museums offer free admission and when.
Witte Museum: Admission is free on Tuesdays from 3 to 8 pm. Free Tuesdays are made possible through support from Bolner’s Fiesta Products, Inc., Frost Bank Charitable Foundation, the George Welden Sheffield Fund of the San Antonio Area Foundation, Macy’s Foundation, and Targe
McNay Museum: Entrance to Main Collection Galleries is free on H-E-B Thursday Nights from 4 to 9 pm and on AT&T First Sundays of the Month. Admission does not include entrance to The Orient Expressed. That’s an extra $5 charge. Children 12 and under are always free.
San Antonio Museum of Art: General Museum admission is free every Tuesday from 4 to 9 pm. Also, if you are a student or employee of Alamo Community Colleges (ACCD), Trinity University, University of Texas at San Antonio, University of the Incarnate Word, St. Anthony Elementary School, St. Peter Prince of Apostles Elementary School, Incarnate Word High School, or St. Anthony Catholic High School students, faculty, and staff you get free admission to the Museum with your school ID.
San Antonio Children’s Museum: On the third Thursday, children 12 and under are free from 5 to 7 pm Adults are $7. If you present your parking ticket for validation, it costs just $1 between 5 and 7 p.m. to park at the Houston St garage.
Museo Alameda: There is free admission on Tuesdays, children 12 and under are always free. However, admission is free every day during the month of January 2012 to kick off the new year.
Texas Transportation Museum: The museum offers free admission anytime for active duty military personnel and their families.
San Antonio Missions: You can walk around any of the missions free any time whenever the parks are open.
