Six free things to do with your kids in San Antonio this summerPosted by Sarah on June 03, 2012
One of the best things about summer for kids? Being free from school.
One of the most challenging things about summer for parents? Kids being free from school. And, finding free things to keep them busy during the break.
We’ve rounded up some awesome free activities to make the summer epic (and affordable).
All summer long, kids 15 and under can practice hitting the pins for free. Go online and register to get a weekly voucher that’s good for two free games per child, per day. That doesn’t include shoe rental, but if your kid is an alley cat, it’s a great deal. The free bowling lasts all summer, through September 3. And parents, if you want in on a great bowling deal as well, you might consider getting a Summer Pass- you can play alongside your kids and who knows, it might even come time to invest in some bowling shirts.
Free Kids’ Night at the Children’s Museum is moving from Thursdays (after June 21st) to Tuesdays this summer. Every third Tuesday of the month you can head to the museum and get free parking after 5 p.m. at all city-operated garages as part of the Downtown Tuesday program. Children 12 and under get in free to the Children’s Museum from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. and parent’s pay $8 for a night of fun with the kids.
Admission is free at the Witte from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays (all year long). Some special exhibits may ask for an additional charge, but you’ll have access to all the fun Witte Backyard and Science Treehouse exploring you can handle. And you can check out the new South Texas Heritage Center while you’re there.
Every Tuesday from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. your family can enjoy the San Antonio Museum of Art for free. And, starting June 3rd, there is also free admission to SAMA every Sunday from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. That’s two chances to see some amazing collections and add a little cultural education to your family’s summer activities without breaking the bank.
Check your local YMCA for a list of Summer Activities including Family Events (free!). There are bingo nights, movie nights, swimming, and fun all summer long.
As much as we love being outdoors, air conditioning is nice. How about catching a free movie? San Antonio movie theaters offer summer movies for free all summer long. Check out our roundup of listings here.
