Be a Star: Upcoming Fall Youth AuditionsPosted by Sarah W on August 08, 2012
Does your child love performing? Even if it’s for a living room audience of stuffed animals, if your child has that spark why not explore it? There are some audition opportunities coming up this month with the chance for your child to take center stage.
First up, The Woodlawn Theatre is holding Fall Youth Auditions as part of the Woodlawn Academy. They are auditioning for both the youth and teen casts of their upcoming show Disney’s Little Mermaid and the teen cast of 13: The Musical.
The youth cast auditions are for children between the ages of 5 and 12, while the teen cast is aimed towards kids ages 13 to 18. Auditions will be held at the Woodlawn Academy of Performing Arts, 1920 Fredericksburg Rd, on Saturday, August 11 and Sunday August 12 from 10 am to 5 pm. To register for an audition time, email chris at woodlawntheatre.com.
Parents, it’s important to know just what a commitment your family might be getting into. So note that rehearsals begin the first week in September. If your child is in the youth cast, rehearsals are Tuesday from 5:30 – 8:30 pm. Teen cast rehearsals are Sundays from 2 pm – 5 pm. (Each of these casts will perform 3 shows, January 11 – 14, 2013)
The cast of 13: The Musical will rehearse Saturdays from 2 pm – 5 pm and perform January 18 – 20, 2013.
If your starlet prefers dancing to singing, Alamo Arts Ballet Theatre is holding company auditions for the 2012-2013 season. Aimed towards more seasoned dancers, auditions are for those ages 13 and up with at least two years of pointe.
Auditions will be held Saturday, August 25 starting at 1 pm at the Ballet Arts School, 2103 Lockhill Selma Rd., San Antonio, TX 78213. Wear appropriate ballet attire, and those accepted will be asked to maintain a minimum number of classes per week at the Ballet Arts School, appropriate to their accepted position.
The neat thing about the Alamo Arts Ballet Theatre is that they work to bring ballet to public schools around San Antonio through a lecture demonstration series given in under-served and low-income communities each season. For more information about auditioning, call (210) 344 – 9428.
If you’re looking for more of a community theater experience for your child, here’s another upcoming audition to keep on your calendar. The Barshop Jewish Community Center’s Youth Performance Troupe STARZ has auditions coming up September 7 and 9, with rehearsals beginning the following week. The auditions are for children in grades 5- 12, and this season, STARZ will be performing The King and I on December 1 and 2 .
STARZ rehearses on Fridays from 4:30pm – 6 pm, and Sundays from 2pm – 4 pm at the Sheldon Vexler Theatre. STARZ is open to both JCC members and non-members.
If you’re a JCC member (or want to become one) with a younger child in grades 2 -4, check out the NOVA youth performance troupe. This fall, they will be performing Disney’s Cinderella, Kids! Registration is limited and the performances are scheduled for December 15 and 16.
If you have any questions about STARZ or NOVA, contact Rachel at (210) 302-6969 or rustinr at jcc-sa.org.
There are a lot of performing arts theaters and programs around San Antonio for kids whose world is a stage. Where are the places your child loves to perform? The bathtub? The dinner table? Share in the comments below.
