The school year has begun and so has the learning, but it’s important to remember that a well-rounded education is not all about getting the grades. There are lots of life-long skills and lessons that are important to teach our children. Right now, San Antonio is working on educating the community about fitness and healthy living, an important lesson for everyone in the family. Did your family participate in the Fit Family Challenge this summer? Well, you can continue working towards fitness and family health during the school year, and there are plenty of opportunities to keep you and your kids motivated.

Ready…

Run for Something Better starting with the ING Kids Rock Training Guide. You can get some great tips on warming up, cooling down, resting and recovering, and of course, running. The program is designed to challenge children to get active, set goals, and start building a habit of physical activity that can last a lifetime.

It’s essentially like training for a marathon through an 8-week program and it’s all building up to a non-timed, non-competitive event sponsored by San Antonio Sports at the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon in November. Kids can be marathon finishers by completing the training program or running the one-mile course on race day, Saturday, November 10.

Plus, if your child follows the training guide and is active a total of 60 minutes a day for at least 5 days a week, for 6 out of 8 weeks, they can earn a Presidential Active Lifestyle Award. A great reward for being active!

Set…

Kids can also get inspired to develop active lifestyles through the Henkel Helps Kids Get Fit program. This program is for the whole school’s participation. It will award one K-12 school with $25,000 to be used towards youth fitness programs and equipment. That is awesome. You can nominate your local area school to win this prize just by answering the following question: How could $25,000 be used to improve fitness, inspire self-esteem and build teamwork at your school?

There are 3 steps in the nomination process. Step 1: Tell them why your school should win. If you make it through the first round and on to Step 2 you make a short video about it. And Step 3, the public votes on which school they think is fit to win. This program adds a level of excitement and competition to inspire the whole school to get active and participate.

Go!

Another avenue that can challenge your family to fitness is HEB’s Ready, Set, Move! Challenge where being active could win you a $1,000 Fitness package or various gift cards to HEB. All it takes is your commitment to exercise at least 150 minutes during the 8-week challenge for your chance to win the prizes. And it’s all a part of the Community Challenge happening around Texas.

Help make San Antonio and your kids healthy, happy, and active this school year.
